Mangal dosha

Mars in certain houses, considered in marriage matching.

Mangal dosha (also called Kuja dosha) is said to be present when Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the chart. Some traditions count it from the Moon or from Venus as well as from the lagna, and some leave out the 2nd house, so lists differ.

The reason it appears in matching is the belief that a strong Mars can bring heat and friction into partnership. The texts also describe many cancellations, for example when Mars is in its own or exalted sign, when it is aspected by Jupiter, or when both partners have it. A careful reading looks at these conditions instead of the bare placement.

It is one of the most over-used ideas in popular astrology. A reading should explain the reasons it applies or is cancelled, which is what our reports do.
